Polymers are large organic chain molecules formed through the polymerization reaction of monomer units. They exhibit high structural diversity, to the extent that all modern industries today use polymeric materials for the production of a wide range of plastic products. The primary application of polymers is in the rubber and plastics industries. These materials are among the most important derivatives of petroleum and are known in the market under various names. Polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene are among the most widely used polymers in the oil and petrochemical industry. The Persian Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company is one of the largest producers of polymer products and the sole producer of items such as polyethylene terephthalate, polycarbonate, and emulsion-grade polyvinyl chloride in Iran.
