The localized towers were developed collaboratively by the company’s engineering, inspection, and process teams and have been installed in Units 211 and 212 to remove moisture from chlorine gas streams, Arvand Petrochemical’s Public Relations office said.
The towers operate using a direct moisture absorption mechanism with concentrated sulfuric acid, passing through Tunnel Tray-type internals made of C-PVC grade Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP). These trays were engineered and fabricated domestically based on precise technical drawings.
Project engineering reports confirm that the new system removes over 85% of moisture in the chlorine stream, significantly enhancing gas purity, reducing corrosion, and minimizing process-related emissions. The new in-house design has also cut manufacturing and delivery times by half—from six months for foreign units to just three months domestically.
Chlorine drying towers are highly sensitive process components in chlorination units due to the corrosive nature of chlorine gas and sulfuric acid vapors. Their construction requires advanced knowledge of materials science and fluid dynamics. The use of GRP with C-PVC, instead of metals or unreinforced polymers, extends service life under corrosive and pressurized conditions.
The Tunnel Tray internals were optimized for improved gas-liquid contact and reduced pressure drop, leading to better process efficiency and lower maintenance costs. This achievement was made possible through collaboration with local partner Kashef Composite Zagros.
